“Oatman Farms owner Dax Hansen bought Oatman Flats Ranch almost four years ago, after his

grandfather farmed the same land over 70 years ago. Dax’s vision for Oatman Farms is to take the farm

back to growing profitable cash crops that thrive in the native soil of the Gila River Valley. The fallowed

cotton farm has since been converted into a farm that grows hardy native species and historically

successful crops in the arid desert environment. For example, White Sonora, a winter wheat first

introduced into Mexico and southern Arizona by Spanish settlers over 300 years ago, was grown by the

native peoples in the Gila River Valley as a winter crop. It is a durable wheat that thrives in the salty soil

found in Oatman Flats. . . .

Land Manager and AZ Soil Health Champion

Yadi Wang hopes to restore balance to the

entire ecosystem connected to the farm, not

just the farm itself.”
